As captain of UConn’s Equestrian Team, Samantha Calzone ’18 (CAHNR) was the kind of leader teammates lovingly called “Mom”— the one who kept everyone grounded, focused, and supported. At UConn’s Department of Animal Science in the College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources, she found a community that nurtured her growth and helped her build the confidence and skills to thrive.
In 2019, just as she was beginning her career, Samantha’s life was tragically cut short in a workplace accident. Today, her spirit lives on through the Samantha Calzone Scholarship, awarded each year to students in the Department of Animal Science who share her passion and commitment as members of the Equestrian Team.
From Samantha’s mother, Ruthann Pritchard: “UConn helped nurture Samantha into a beautiful young woman, full of energy, enthusiasm, and the skills she needed to succeed. This scholarship helps give other students that same opportunity — to grow, both academically and personally, in a place that truly supports them.”
Honor Samantha’s legacy and invest in the next generation. During UConn Gives, your impact is doubled — Ruthann Pritchard will match every gift, dollar-for-dollar, up to $10,000.
The UConn Foundation (EIN 06-6070722) is an independent, not-for-profit, tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization that exists to support the educational, scientific, cultural, research, and recreational objectives of the University of Connecticut.
