About

Established in 2003, the Gladstein Family Human Rights Institute (HRI) at the University of Connecticut advances human rights knowledge and practice through research, teaching, and engagement. As a university-wide program under the Office of Global Affairs, HRI supports interdisciplinary inquiry into the most pressing human rights questions and prepares the next generation of human rights advocates across a range of fields.

Your support enables us to provide unique internship opportunities, foster innovative research, and public engagement activities close to home and beyond. Some of these initiatives include:

  • Funding for student internships at organizations such as Amnesty International USA, Bellwether International, Business and Human Rights Research Center and Integrated Refugee and Immigrant Services (IRIS). These provide important experiential learning opportunities for our students as they prepare for careers in human rights.
  • Trainings for UConn faculty to incorporate dialogue into their classrooms through our Democracy & Dialogue Initiative (DDI). DDI works to increase democratic and civic capacity by supporting community dialogues on critical issues, providing moderator and facilitation training for dialogues and deliberations, and partnering with campus colleagues and local institutions to increase meaningful participation by all community members.
  • Supporting the development and maintenance of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) Digital Archives at UConn. This project works to identify, evaluate, process, and make available additional materials with the goal of advancing a better understanding of the work of the ICTY and the history of the conflict in the former Yugoslavia.
  • Innovated interdisciplinary research and programing in the areas of art, business, economic & social rights, education, engineering, film & digital media, global health, Holocaust & genocide studies, humanitarianism and research.

The UConn Foundation (EIN 06-6070722) is an independent, not-for-profit, tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization that exists to support the educational, scientific, cultural, research, and recreational objectives of the University of Connecticut.
