The Office for Inclusion and Civil Rights (OICR) works across the University of Connecticut to advance access, opportunity, and equity through education, advocacy, and civil rights compliance. We partner with students, faculty, staff, and community organizations to support a campus environment grounded in accountability, engagement, and belonging.
Our work spans three core areas:
Advocacy and Sense of Belonging - We provide individual support to those who have experienced harm, discrimination, and/or bias, as well as institutional advocacy related to policies and practices across all university units to enhance access, promote equity, and create welcoming educational, work, and clinical spaces that celebrate the experiences of individuals across backgrounds, with the goal of strengthening campus climate and community.
Education and Health Equity - We conduct trainings and deliver programs focused on issues impacting UConn communities and health equity. This includes required trainings for Connecticut State employees, as well as offerings such as diversity awareness, sexual harassment prevention, and psychological safety.
Affirmative Action and Compliance - We respond to inquiries and complaints related to the University’s non-discrimination policies and ensure compliance with state and federal laws governing equal opportunity and affirmative action, including Title VI, Title VII, Title IX, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and the Connecticut Fair Employment Practices Act.
This year, we highlight three initiatives where your support directly contributes to our work:
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Living Legacy Convocation & Awards - A signature university event and annual campus tradition that honors Dr. King’s legacy by uplifting leaders, scholars, and community members whose work advances justice, service, and collective impact. Read how Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy comes to life at UConn
Health Equity Research Symposium & Poster Session - An interdisciplinary gathering that highlights research and community-engaged work advancing health equity, bringing together students, faculty, and community partners to share knowledge and engage critical issues. Learn more about this year's symposium and poster session.
Community Building and Support Spaces - Consultations, trainings, and facilitated dialogues that support departments, organizations, and communities in building more responsive and connected environments. Examples include OICR’s recent Collective Healing: A Full Spectrum Listening Exercise gathering, and bi-weekly coffee hour breaks for faculty and staff.
Your support helps sustain and expand these efforts across the university and beyond.
