The African American Cultural Center is raising money for the H. Fred Simons African American Cultural Center Scholarship Fund, which was created with dedication to supporting African American, Caribbean, and African students on their financial journeys to higher education. Our Cultural Center was established in 1968 to support students who face unique societal and institutional challenges in developing to the fullest extent of their potential. The Center strives to assist students in overcoming these challenges and supports them in their adjustments to college life through the development of cultural awareness, academic excellence, leadership skills, social consciousness, and personal success.
Initiatives that this fund will support include, but are not limited to:
- Providing financial assistance to undergraduate students with tuition, travel, and/or living expenses related to a UConn-approved study abroad program (including the Summer in Ghana Program).
- Granting scholarships to assist our students with paying tuition and other university related fees.
- Enhancing and renovating the Center (“facelift”) to improve facilities, accessibility, and create a more welcoming, engaging space for students.
- Providing financial assistance for our mentorship program: Black Leadership and Community Cultivation (B.L.A.C.C.), formerly known as the Preparing African American Students to Sustain Success (P.A².S.S) Program.
The African American Cultural Center Scholarship Fund exists to make higher education more accessible and affordable for students of the African Diaspora at UConn who despite personal and socio-economic hardships, are determined to make positive contributions to their communities both locally and globally. Any donation, no matter how big or small, goes a long way, and will be beneficial to our community here at UConn. We are counting on you. Thank you!
The UConn Foundation (EIN 06-6070722) is an independent, not-for-profit, tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization that exists to support the educational, scientific, cultural, research, and recreational objectives of the University of Connecticut.
