The Office of First Year Programs and Learning Communities is dedicated to empowering students as they make one of the most important transitions of their lives, entering college. We provide the guidance, community, and resources students need to build confidence, find belonging, and succeed at the University of Connecticut from day one.

With an array of courses, workshops, personal support networks, resources, and unique living and learning experiences, First Year Programs helps UConn students start strong and persist to graduation.

Your gift during UConn Gives directly supports first‑year students through:

• Impactful First-Year Experience courses and initiatives that lay the foundation for personal, academic, and social success.
• Transformational Learning Communities, both residential and non-residential, that give students shared purpose, community, and opportunities to grow.
• Robust peer mentoring programs that create meaningful connections and equip student leaders with the training they need to support others.
• Skill‑building workshops and activities that help students strengthen academic habits, manage time effectively, and take ownership of their learning.
• The Innovation Zone, a creative, hands-on environment where students can explore their creativity, build, design, and develop an entrepreneurial mindset.

John T. Szarlan Memorial Student Mentor Award

• This award recognizes outstanding First-Year Experience (FYE) mentors who make a meaningful impact on student success, leadership, and community building across all UConn campuses.
• This award celebrates mentors who go above and beyond to support, guide, and inspire first-year students.
